Fellowships

The Kauffman Fellowship Program offers outstanding young scientists formal training in business skills and entrepreneurship. This program, a collaborative effort conceived within the Skandalaris Center, connects the John M. Olin School of Business, the School of Medicine, the School of Law, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and other parts of the University.

Through the program, Ph.D. students in the Division of Biology and BioMedical Sciences have a unique opportunity to learn how scientific discoveries are translated into successful commercial ventures. The Kauffman Fellowship is a one-year experience that provides an exceptional opportunity to learn how science discoveries are evaluated for commercialization potential, how discoveries are translated into products, the steps involved in starting a company, and the wealth of resources available to guide entrepreneurs.

The fellowship includes:
  • A semester-long course entitled BioEntrepreneurship
  • Opportunities for applied learning, collaborating with other researchers, and interacting with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and individuals having similar scientific interests
  • Workships with industry experts
To apply: Students who have completed their qualifying exams and thesis proposal are eligible for nomination by their thesis mentor. The Bio-Entrepreneurship course may be completed before or after the fellowship application. For more information or to apply, please contact Debbie Sinak in the Division of Biology and BioMedical Sciences at 314.362.3365.
